Glutathione functions in redox balance, detoxification, and sulfur amino acid storage. It participates in reactions that help maintain ascorbate and protein thiol status. The molecule serves as a cofactor for several enzymes, including glutathione peroxidases and glutathione S-transferases. These enzymes reduce peroxides and conjugate electrophiles, respectively. Glutathione also contributes to the metabolism of xenobiotics and to the transport of cysteine between tissues. How interorgan transport and tissue-specific regulation shape whole-body pools remains an active area of study.
Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Its cysteine residue carries a thiol group, which allows the molecule to participate in reduction and oxidation reactions. The compound exists in most living cells, where the reduced form, often abbreviated GSH, is usually more abundant than the oxidized disulfide form, GSSG. Intracellular concentrations are commonly in the millimolar range, while extracellular concentrations are much lower. This uneven distribution supports its role as a major cellular redox buffer.
Cells synthesize glutathione through two ATP-dependent enzymatic steps. The first step combines glutamate and cysteine to form gamma-glutamylcysteine, catalyzed by glutamate-cysteine ligase. The second step adds glycine, producing the complete tripeptide, catalyzed by glutathione synthetase. Glutathione itself can inhibit the first enzyme, providing negative feedback when levels are high. Because cysteine is often limiting, its availability influences how quickly the pathway proceeds. These reactions occur in the cytosol, and the resulting glutathione can be distributed to other compartments.
Several analytical methods can quantify glutathione, including high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with UV or fluorescence detection for separating GSH and GSSG. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) offers higher specificity and sensitivity, often detecting nanomolar concentrations. The enzymatic recycling assay, often called the Tietze method, measures total glutathione by coupling reduction of GSSG to a colorimetric or fluorometric readout. Capillary electrophoresis and electrochemical detection are also used in specialized laboratories. Each method has distinct advantages and limitations regarding throughput, cost, and susceptibility to interference.
Interpreting glutathione measurements requires attention to pre-analytical variables. The GSSG concentration in a sample can rise artificially during storage or processing, making the GSH/GSSG ratio unreliable if not controlled. Reference ranges vary by specimen type, assay, and population, so comparisons across studies are difficult. Plasma glutathione is low and sensitive to hemolysis, while whole blood reflects primarily erythrocyte content. Many studies measure total glutathione rather than the reduced and oxidized forms separately, which limits conclusions about redox status.
Accurate measurement of glutathione begins with careful sample handling. Because GSH oxidizes rapidly to GSSG, samples must be processed quickly or frozen immediately. Acid precipitation with metaphosphoric acid or perchloric acid is common; it lowers pH, precipitates proteins, and helps preserve the reduced form. Chelating agents such as EDTA can limit metal-catalyzed oxidation. For whole blood, hemolysis releases glutathione from erythrocytes, so plasma and serum values differ substantially from whole blood values.

The Berlin Crisis of 1961 was the last major incident in the Cold War regarding the status of Berlin and post–World War II Germany. By the early 1950s, the Soviet approach to restricting emigration movement was emulated by most of the rest of the Eastern Bloc. However, hundreds of thousands of East Germans annually emigrated to free and prosperous West Germany through a "loophole" in the system that existed between East Berlin and West Berlin. The emigration resulted in a massive "brain drain" from East Germany to West Germany of younger educated professionals, such that nearly 20% of East Germany's population had migrated to West Germany by 1961. That June, the Soviet Union issued a new ultimatum demanding the withdrawal of Allied forces from West Berlin. The request was rebuffed, but the United States now limited its security guarantees to West Berlin. On 13 August, East Germany erected a barbed-wire barrier that would eventually be expanded through construction into the Berlin Wall, effectively closing the loophole and preventing its citizens from fleeing to the West.
Fish food should ideally provide the fish with fat (for energy) and amino acids (building blocks of proteins) and the fish food (whether flake or pellet) must be speedily digested in order to prevent buildup of intestinal gas, kidney failure and infections (such as swim bladder problems and dropsy) and to avoid aquarium pollution due to excessive ammonia. Aquatic diets for carnivores must contain vegetable matter such as spirulina.

Div. 2: Double early – with fully double flowers, bowl shaped to 8 cm (3 inches) across. Plants typically grow from 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) tall. Div. 3: Triumph – single, cup shaped flowers up to 6 cm (2.5 inches) wide. Plants grow 35–60 cm (14–24 inches) tall and bloom mid to late season. Div. 4: Darwin hybrid – single flowers are ovoid in shape and up to 6 cm (2.5 inches) wide. Plants grow 50–70 cm (20–28 inches) tall and bloom mid to late season. This group should not be confused with older Darwin tulips, which belong in the Single Late Group below. Div. 5: Single late – cup or goblet-shaped flowers up to 8 cm (3 inches) wide, some plants produce multi-flowering stems. Plants grow 45–75 cm (18–30 inches) tall and bloom late season. Div. 6: Lily-flowered – the flowers possess a distinct narrow 'waist' with pointed and reflexed petals. Previously included with the old Darwins, only became a group in their own right in 1958. Div. 7: Fringed (Crispa) – cup or goblet-shaped blossoms edged with spiked or crystal-like fringes, sometimes called "tulips for touch" because of the temptation to "test" the fringes to see if they are real or made of glass. Perennials with a tendency to naturalise in woodland areas, growing 45–65 cm (18–26 inches) tall and blooming in late season. Div. 8: Viridiflora Div. 9: Rembrandt Div. 10: Parrot Div. 11: Double late – Large, heavy blooms.

== Cause == The main risk factor is a history of diabetes mellitus type 2. Occasionally it may occur in those without a prior history of diabetes or those with diabetes mellitus type 1. Triggers include infections, stroke, trauma, certain medications, and heart attacks. Other risk factors:
On 2 August 1944, the division became part of the First Allied Airborne Army. In September, planning for Operation Market Garden, the Allied invasion of the Netherlands, began in earnest. The operation called for three, at minimum, airborne divisions to seize and hold key bridges and roads deep behind German lines. The 504th PIR, now back at full strength, was reassigned to the 82nd, while the 507th was assigned to the 17th Airborne Division, at the time training in England.
Legal proceedings involving UCC, the United States and Indian governments, local Bhopal authorities, and the disaster victims started immediately after the catastrophe. The Indian Government passed the Bhopal Gas Leak Act in March 1985, allowing the Government of India to act as the legal representative for victims of the disaster, leading to the beginning of legal proceedings. Initial lawsuits were generated in the United States federal court system. On 17 April 1985, Federal District court judge John F. Keenan (overseeing one lawsuit) suggested that "'fundamental human decency' required Union Carbide to provide between $5 million and $10 million to immediately help the injured" and suggested the money could be quickly distributed through the International Red Cross. UCC, on the notion that doing so did not constitute an admission of liability and the figure could be credited toward any future settlement or judgement, offered a $5 million relief fund two days later. The Indian government turned down the offer. In March 1986, UCC proposed a settlement figure, endorsed by plaintiffs' U.S. attorneys, of $350 million that would, according to the company, "generate a fund for Bhopal victims of between $500–600 million over 20 years". In May, litigation was transferred from the United States to Indian courts by a U.S. District Court ruling. Following an appeal of this decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals affirmed the transfer in November 1986, judging that UCIL was a "a separate and independent legal entity, managed and operated exclusively by Indian citizens in India".
== Adverse events == In 2005, the FDA announced that they were investigating reports of death and other serious adverse events related to narcotic overdose in patients using Duragesic, the fentanyl transdermal patch for pain control. The Duragesic product label was subsequently updated to add safety information in June 2005. In 2007, Shire and Noven Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of the Daytrana ADHD patch, announced a voluntary recall of several lots of the patch due to problems with separating the patch from its protective release liner. Since then, no further problems with either the patch or its protective packaging have been reported. In 2008, two manufacturers of the fentanyl patch, ALZA Pharmaceuticals (a division of major medical manufacturer Johnson & Johnson) and Sandoz, subsequently issued a recall of their versions of the patch due to a manufacturing defect that allowed the gel containing the medication to leak out of its pouch too quickly, which could result in overdose and death. As of March 2009, Sandoz—now manufactured by ALZA—no longer uses gel in its transdermal fentanyl patch; instead, Sandoz-branded fentanyl patches use a matrix/adhesive suspension (where the medication is blended with the adhesive instead of held in a separate pouch with a porous membrane), similar to other fentanyl patch manufacturers such as Mylan and Janssen. In 2009, the FDA announced a public health advisory warning of the risk of burns during MRI scans from transdermal drug patches with metallic backings.

Glutathione is built from three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. The linkage involves the gamma-carboxyl group of glutamate rather than the alpha-carboxyl group, which is unusual for peptides. This structure protects the bond from some common peptidases.
It is present in nearly all cells, with notable amounts in the liver, kidneys, and red blood cells. The highest intracellular concentrations are usually in the millimolar range. Levels differ by tissue, age, and physiological state.
It is not classified as an essential nutrient because cells can synthesize it from amino acids. Dietary sources exist, but their contribution to tissue pools is not fully established. The body's production depends on enzyme activity and precursor availability.
Glutathione oxidizes quickly when cells are disrupted or when samples sit at room temperature. Rapid processing or immediate freezing minimizes the conversion of GSH to GSSG. This step helps ensure that the measured ratio reflects the original biological state.
